In the mid 1800's, access west of Dubbo was mainly routed along the rivers.  This was to give watering places for the horse and bullock teams.  Access to Nyngan followed the Bogan River, and to Warren, was along the Macquarie River.

It was the construction of the railway through to Nyngan that led to the building of a small siding (near the present station).  This siding was called Trangie - being part of "Trangie Station" on which it was located at the time.  It was established as a crossing station, meaning, this was theonly place between Narromine and Nevertire where trains going in opposite directions could pass each other.  A small bush track followed the railway line between Narromine and Trangie and the present road follows approximately the same path.

In July 1883, John Campbell and his family came to Trangie where the only settlers were the stationmaster, John Bates, and a few fettlers.  He built the first hotel.
Mr Lindsay followed and built the first store, and gradually, other settlers followed.

In 1914, the Trangie Experimental Farm was established (later called the Trangie Agricultural Research Centre).
