Lesley Turner-Bowery Lesley Turner was born in trangie in 1942. She was one of the players who took part in the first Federation Cup in 1963. The Federation Cup - is the women's equivalent of the Davis Cup and was launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Tennis Federation. It was the brainchild of Mrs Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman back in 1919, who was strongly supported by Mrs Nell Hopman, wife of the legendary Australian Davis Cup captain, Harry Hopman. The inaugural event attracted 16 nations and the leading players of the day. Australia has been the champion nation seven times and reached the final on 11 occasions. Played over one week in a different venue each year, the inaugural event attracted 16 countries, compared with 100 nations in 2001. The top players supported the competition right from the start. Held at the Queen's Club, London, the first contest between Australia and USA set the tone with Grand Slam Champions Darlene Hard, Billie Jean King, Margaret Smith Court and Lesley Turner all proudly representing their country on court.
