The Trangie Agricultural Research Centre is a Centre of Excellence specialising in Rangeland Management.
It has a long and distinguished history in agricultural research. It was established in 1914 as the Trangie experimental Farm. The Centre provides research, extension and education services which enhance the profitability and sustainability of the agricultural and pastoral industries, with special reference to western NSW. As well as rangeland management, the Centre is renowned for its research in Merino and beef cattle genetics, and the development of conservation farming technology through its Agriculutural Engineering Research Unit.
As part of its evolution, the Centre has developed an educational role through the provision of short courses in a variety of subjects relevant to its areas of expertise. In addition to research and education, it is adopting advanced conservation farming practices in the management of its own commercial croping areas.
The Centre comprises 3900 hectares of mixed red and grey soils in the heart of the Macquarie Valley. Some 2790 hectares are grazed as native pasture, with 320 hectares developed for flood irigation and 490 hectares used for dryland cropping in rotation with sown (lucerne) pasture.
